The government’s decision to ban engineered stone by July 1st, 2024, has certainly caused a significant shift in our industry. Engineered stone has been popular in Australia for its design flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and low maintenance qualities. Over the last few months the focus was on creating an alternative that meets both safety standards and consumer expectations.
Engineered stone came into a negative light after it was linked to silicosis, a lung disease caused by airborne dust particles. Although engineered stone was deemed safe for end consumers, the governments focus was on improving Health and Safety at the workplace.

It’s impressive how quickly the industry responded to the government’s ban on engineered stone with such an innovative solution. Two companies here in Australia, Stone Ambassador and Caesarstone completely transitioned their existing products to a 0% silica product. This new product is made largely from recycled materials like glass, it not only addresses health concerns but also enhances environmental sustainability.
This new revolutionary material still has the same properties we loved so much about the old product – it is resistant to heat, cracks, scratches and stains. And the companies transitioned almost all their colours from the existing stone range to the 0% silica product range. The colours and decors are as stunning as usual.

The crystalline free silica product from Stone Ambassador is now called Zenith Surfaces and the product from Caesarstone is now called Mineral Surfaces. Alternatively to the 0% silica product range both companies offer another alternative material that has gained popularity on the market – porcelain surfaces.
Porcelain surfaces is another striking material to be used in kitchen and bathroom design. It is very versatile and also hardwearing. If you are planning an outdoor kitchen then this is the right product to choose due to it’s exceptional durability. It can hold up against the harsh conditions in Australia. To connect both spaces your outdoor area and the kitchen space you can use porcelain benchtops in both areas to create a cohesive look.
